Da setzte
sich der Fuchs hintenauf, dann der Wolf,
der Bär, der Hirsch, der Löwe
und alle Tiere in dem Wald. So ging die
Fahrt fort, da kamen sie an einen Bach.
'Wie sollen wir nun hinüber?' sagte
das Hähnchen. Da lag ein Strohhalm
am Bach, der sagte 'ich will mich quer
darüberlegen, so könnt ihr über
mich fahren.' Wie aber die sechs Mäuse
auf die Brücke kamen, rutschte der
Strohhalm aus und fiel ins Wasser, und
die sechs Mäuse fielen alle hinein
und ertranken. Da ging die Not von neuem
an, und kam eine Kohle und sagte 'ich bin
groß genug, ich will mich darüberlegen,
und ihr sollt über mich fahren.

Then the fox seated himself at the back, and after that the wolf, the bear, the stag, the lion, and all the beasts of the forest did the same. Then the procession went onwards, and they reached the stream. "How are we to get over?" said the little cock. A straw was lying by the stream, and it said, "I will lay myself across, and you shall drive over me." But when the six mice came to the bridge, the straw slipped and fell into the water, and the six mice all fell in and were drowned. Then they were again in difficulty, and a coal came and said, "I am large enough, I will lay myself across and you shall drive over me." |
