Besides that werden
describes all types of changes it also has the function
of being the modal verb to form the future. The English
has two types of future - the compound future I and the
be-going-to-future.
Compound
future I
I will go to Italy.
You will go to France.
He will go to Spain.
/ She will go to Peru.
We will go to Europe.
You will go the Australia
They will go to the
moon.
Be-going-to
future
I am going to kick your
...
You are going to kick
mine.
He / she is going to
kick theirs.
We are going to kick
his.
You are going to kick
hers.
They are going to kick
nobody's.
In German there is only one form of future - similar
to the compound future I (with the modal verb will).
It is formed with a conjugated form of werden
and the infinitive of the verb.
Werden +
infinitive (read, write, swim,
work)
ich werde
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
du wirst
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
er / sie / es wird
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
wir werden
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
ihr werdet
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
sie werden
lesen, schreiben,
schwimmen, arbeiten
Examples
Ich
werde das Buch lesen. = I will read
the book.
Du wirst nach Italien
fahren. = You will go to Italy.
Wir werden ein Auto
kaufen. = We will buy a car.
You will notice that the word order is again the same
as with other compound tenses as
described in chapter
15.7
subject + conjugated verb + object I + object II + attribute
+ infinitive verb (resp. perfect participle).
Also the word order of compound tenses even with modal
verbs is the same as described before. The infinitive
modal verb is the very last in the word order.
Word
order of future with modal verbs
Wir
werden uns ein Auto mieten müssen.
= We will have to rent a car.
Ihr werdet eure
Kleider waschen wollen. = You will
want to wash your clothes.
Wir werden es können
müssen. = We will have to know
it.
