Im Tannenbühl, wo die Bäume dichter standen, saß er ab, band sein Pferd an und ging schnellen Schrittes dem Gipfel des Hügels zu, und als er vor der dicken Tanne stand, hub er seinen Spruch an:

Having arrived at that part where the trees stand thickest, he dismounted, and went with a quick pace towards the summit of the hill, and as he stood before the thick pine he repeated the following verse:

»Schatzhauser im grünen Tannenwald,
Bist viele hundert Jahre alt,
Dein ist all' Land, wo Tannen stehen,
Läßt dich nur Sonntagskindern sehen.«

“Keeper of wealth in the forest of pine,
Hundreds of years are surely thine:
Thine is the tall pine’s dwelling place–
Those born on Sunday see thy face.”
