19.4.2.5 Reported speech without the conjunction dass
In German - as well as in English - the conjunction before the subordinate phrase can be used but can also be omitted.
Er sagt,
dass
er keine Lust habe.
= He says
that
he does not feel like it.
One can also say:
Er sagt, er habe keine Lust.
= He says he does not feel like it.
As we have discussed already in the chapter about
some conjunctions,
the position of the verb changes when the conjunction
dass
appears in a sentence.
