19.3.4.2 Conjugation of transitive verbs (modal verb: haben) |
In the reported speech the conjunctive I has no different function from the conjunctive II. The conjunctive II appears in reported speech for two different reasons.
The use of the conjunctive II instead of the conjunctive I happens so often, even if there is a distinctive conjunctive I that nowadays it is hardly noticed as an error anymore. Nevertheless it should not be forgotten what the actual function of a conjunctive II is. In the reported speech the conjunctive II is only a substitute for an ambiguous conjunctive I. You might have read something else, but believe us, the conjunctive II has nothing to do with a more distanced way of seeing things. The conjunctive II cannot have two functions at the same time.
Examples:Er sagt: "Sie hat sich Schuhe gekauft."
The transformation as in a) can be found very often even though it is not correct. The conjunctive I of the third person singular is not ambiguous and therefore should be used.
Er sagt: "Wir sind in der Schule gewesen."
